Who We Are

Shelburne Farms is an education nonprofit on a mission to inspire and cultivate learning for a sustainable future.

We realize our mission by integrating three key areas of activity: our programs, place, and products.

Who We’re Looking for

This seasonal role will help with the busy field work throughout the spring season.  Explore the forest stands and field edges of Shelburne Farms while hand pulling garlic mustard.  Garlic mustard is an invasive species that does not mesh with our forest stewardship goals. We have been working to keep this species from dominating the forest floor since 2012.  You will cover terrain that is off the “beaten path” at the Farm, discover hidden beaches, find forest mushrooms, and cross paths with a few cows along the way!

What You’ll Do

  • Methodically walk the forest and field edge areas (identified in the garlic mustard plan), scanning the terrain for garlic mustard to hand pull.
  • Mow garlic mustard in some areas with a walk-behind mower or string trimmer.
  • Hand pull or weed wrench buckthorn and honeysuckle (small shrubs).
  • Label plastic and glass syrup bottles that are sold at the Farm Store.

Core Qualifications

  • Positive attitude and willingness to be a contributing member of a team.
  • Maintain focus and drive while completing repetitive tasks.
  • Motivation to maintain a quick work pace as we have a lot of ground to cover!

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Outdoor work environment with varied weather conditions, including working in rain, mud, heat, mosquitoes, etc.
  • Able to bend over and kneel while hand pulling invasives.
  • Comfortable working in close proximity to stinging nettle, poison ivy, poison parsnip.  Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided.
  • Able to move over uneven terrain.
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs consistently.
